Motor scooter accident severely injures Allentown man

Allentown resident tragically hit

Earlier this month, an Allentown resident was tragically hit by two motor vehicles while riding on an electric scooter. The first car struck the man as he was riding along, which sent him flying into traffic. A United States Postal Service truck then hit the man again.

Sadly, this is not the first case of a serious accident on an electric scooter. As electric scooters have started gaining popularity in around 100 cities across the country, emergency rooms have felt the effect. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently found that scooters may be far more dangerous than they realized.

The CDC recently conducted its first study on electric scooter injuries. The study found an average of 70 scooter injuries occur every 60 days. However, some doctors interviewed by the CDC reported that they treat that many scooter injuries in a week.

Most electric scooters can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour, which can cause severe injuries for most riders who do not wear helmets. Doctors describe hitting your head on the pavement at high speeds like being hit by a baseball bat. The injuries can become even more serious when riders are hit by a motor vehicle.

According to CNN, almost half of electric scooter injuries are to the head and neck. Other injuries commonly include broken bones and severe road rash that can involve orthopedic surgeries and facial reconstructions. Doctors report electric scooter injuries have even put some people on life support.

As the recent accident in Allentown shows, electric scooters can be a lot more dangerous than they appear. If you or someone you love sustains an electric scooter injury, consult with a personal injury attorney to discuss who is potentially liable and retain the compensation you deserve.
